Open Farm Sunday is a charity managed by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). It is a unique opportunity for anyone to gain an insight into farming life and to learn about the wonderful work our farmers do. The event takes place on one Sunday every year with over 1600 farmers taking part since it began in 2006.
This year Polly and Mike attended the event at Maundrils Farm in Highbridge, Somerset. Located next to Bridgewater Bay SSSI, Severn Estuary SPA and an important wetland area and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), it was the ideal location for this year’s theme, “farming with nature”. Visitors to their stall were able to learn about the farm’s recent pond enhancement work in conjunction with Clarkson and Woods and FWAG. This was done under a climate change resilience fund with some ponds under a GCN (Great Crested Newt) conservation licence, They also talked about the wildlife of the farm and the vast biodiversity of Somerset’s wildlife in general. There were plenty of interesting specimens such as skulls, owl pellets, and snake sloughs to examine as well as pond dipping.
